Salford Lung Study
A pioneering study that continues to influence modern thinking for real-world evidence in clinical trials.
The Salford Lung Study (SLS) broke new ground as the first Phase III pragmatic randomised controlled trial to generate real-world evidence in asthma and COPD patients before market approval. By leveraging NWEH’s FARSITE recruitment tool and its real-time ConneXon safety monitoring system, the study recruited a broad, inclusive patient population and captured near real-time safety data, setting a new benchmark for trial design. Its success helped shift regulatory attitudes toward integrating RWE alongside traditional RCTs, influencing guidance from the FDA, MHRA, and EMA and inspiring thousands of pragmatic trials worldwide.
